To be humane is to be compassionate to all life

 Welcome & أهلا وسهلا

Our Story

This journey began when our founder, Mrs. Margaret Ledger, committed her time and resources to improve Animal Welfare in Jordan.

In 2000, Margaret felt it was time to apply all her skills and dedicated significant work to establish, on private land owned by her, the Humane Center for Animal Welfare. HCAW would be the next step to creating a professional and comprehensive animal welfare entity to serve the veterinary and civic communities in Jordan.

HCAW gained broad support and popularity for its vision to support the working and productive animals of vulnerable communities throughout Jordan. Margaret proceeded with confidence to gain the necessary funding from the United Kingdom’s World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). In 2005, Margaret worked closely with engineers from the Greater Amman Municipality to complete the design for the new hospital to be part of the centre. I
n addition, the Jordanian Ministry of Planning and International Affairs helped coordinate the lease of land from the Greater Amman Municipality to lay the foundation for what would be the center’s location today.

Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah laid the foundation stone for the center in 2006 and opened the new hospital a year later. HCAW, its supporters and the broader community were grateful to Her Majesty for her gracious support. This new hospital has continued to help the livelihoods of the vulnerable communities in Jordan by providing much needed care for their working animals.

Today, HCAW has developed into a well-known center of excellence in veterinary care and a leader in animal welfare education and the promotion and protection of animal rights.

Our Vision

The vision of the Humane Center for Animal Welfare is simple: to create a more compassionate and informed community. A community that works together to increase respect for all animals, while working to improve their health and welfare. A community that recognizes the interdependence of humanity, the environment and the animal kingdom.

Why are we the "Humane" Center for Animal Welfare?

By including the word “humane” in our name, we approach our work with compassion, sympathy and consideration towards animals,  the people who care for them, and for the nature that surrounds us. Thus, honouring our inter-connectedness and inter-dependency.

Our Mission

Our mission is to work for, and with local communities to overcome traditional misconceptions about animal treatment and to increase understanding of the importance of animal welfare by providing comprehensive professional veterinary and associated community services supported by wide ranging awareness and educational programs.

Our Goals

  • To improve the economic well-being of the poorer society segments by providing free comprehensive professional veterinary services, particularly for those in rural areas who depend upon their animals for their livelihoods...
  • To provide professional veterinary care to all animals, and to support Jordan’s professional veterinary community by providing training opportunities as well as extending the opportunity to undergraduate veterinarians to gain practical experience...
  •  To protect, shelter and re-home abused and abandoned companion, working, and productive animals...

Our Team

  • We are group of 20 hardworking and dedicated team members, both employees and volunteers, who serve a large and growing animal community. We are veterinarians, animal handlers, administrators, educators, and assistants who come together each day to foster greater awareness and improved animal health. We are governed by a Board of Directors. Margaret Ledger has served as Director General since 2000.
We come together around a shared passion and goal of improving animal welfare in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Our Funding

The Humane Center for Animal Welfare is a private, non-profit organization that does not receive any municipal or national funding in Jordan. Most of the funds necessary to operate our organization are raised through veterinary services, boarding & grooming services and your local donations. We operate independently of any other organization.

Dear HCAW Friends,

I'd like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your interest in our work and for supporting our efforts to promote animal welfare in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Since the opening of our organization in September 2000, we have achieved major milestones with your constant support. We have been able to offer poor animal owners continuously the FREE veterinary treatment of their sick or injured working and productive animals, and in doing so, we are supporting their daily livelihoods. Similarly, we are very proud of our FREE and on-going educational program for public school children aimed at teaching them about animal welfare as well as stimulating civic responsibility and compassion in our society.
However, as much as we may be doing with your support, the journey remains long and challenging. In a region where priorities make demands on limited resources, we will need to double our effort if we are to promote further the respect for and humane treatment of all our fellow creatures.

When I reflect on the situation of animals and some of the treatment they suffer worldwide, I see their circumstances as a "mirror image" of some of the factors we as humans have to endure: competing for scarce resources and seeking secure environments. And whereas we humans try to rely on one another and on the systems we have created to those ends, animals are increasingly dependant on us for care, compassion and sanctuary as we encroach on their natural environments.

With your caring and generous support, we will continue to strive for the aims of our Center and to make a difference to the welfare of animals. Let us continue joining hands for a kinder life for us and for our fellow creatures.
